Originally conceived in 1997 as a samurai-focused Resident Evil spin-off under the working title “Sengoku Biohazard”, Capcom’s famed Onimusha saga made its eventual PS2 debut in 2001. The feudal Japanese story sees the samurai and ninja duo of Samanosuke Akechi and Kaede on a quest to rescue Princess Yuki from the clutches of Nobunaga Oda and his demonic forces. The popularity of the original title spawned three increasingly canonical installments, a Tactical RPG spin-off for the Game Boy Advance (Onimusha Tactics) and a multiplayer fighting game for the PS2 (Onimusha Blade Warriors). The Onimusha saga returned in 2012 with the card-based RPG browser game Onimusha: Soul, however the series has since been unseeded over the past 6 years. Earlier today, Capcom revealed that the original game would see a remaster on consoles and PC under its original title, Onimusha: Warlords. The updated version will include high-definition visuals, the option to switch between original and widescreen speciality ratios, and a vertical screen-scroll for widescreen mode, as the remaster will still include the original’s use of stock-still camera angles. For a modern touch, Onimusha: Warlords will indulge controller players to use the left analog stick for movement rather than the D-pad/buttons. Easy Mode will be unlocked from the start of the game, instead of vitalizing without a unrepealable number of deaths, however the difficulty setting cannot be reverted once the player is in-game. Onimusha: Warlords will release for PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch on 1/15/2019.
